About
TechNation Australia is a technology news, review and analysis site with a focus on startups and Internet companies related to Australia.
That might include a local startup taking the plunge in Melbourne, an Aussie making waves overseas or even big players doing their thing down under. If it’s to do with technology and Australia then we’re on it.
TechNation Australia grew out of Sydney Open Coffee, which served to prove that there is an entrepreneurial tech community in Australia that is ready to make things happen.
All over Australia and the world there are bright Aussies continuing the Australian legacy of innovation and excellence in the technology industry. Some are just starting off, others have been at it for a while, many have been successful.
As long as you’re doing something interesting in technology that’s related to Australia you have a good chance to be covered on TechNation Australia. If you think that’s you, then let us know you’re out there!
We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Geoff Evason - Writer
In his own words:
I’m originally from Canada. My first job was in engineering development with RIM, maker of the popular BlackBerry devices, during the dot-com boom. I then accepted a job with Altera, a large San Jose based semiconductor comp[any where I lead one of their software teams. In 2005 I began to travel, eventually settling in Sydney where I managed pre-sales. I then left that startup to become managing director of the online wedding website builder MomentVille.com.
My major interests are: using technology to help make life better, and creating value in the disruption that can be created by innovation.. I believes that technology should just work, should be easy to use, should save you time, should make things easier, and should help you enjoy your life more.

Mike Watkins - Writer
Mike is a 22yo Kiwi whose background in Tech began in 2004 when he created findatraveller.com.
Findatraveller connected solo travellers around the world, the idea being no solo traveller had to travel alone if they didn’t want to.
In late 2005 a decision had to be made regarding the future of findatraveller, as traffic was low and growth was near non existent. He shut down the site in early 2006.
Here, in Mike’s words, is what happened next: -
For the next 18 months I analyzed the online backpacker industry intensely and made note of several new technology developments coming out, as well as what the backpacker really needed in a website. From this, gunnago.com was born.
Gunnago’s core centers around googlemaps technology and allows backpackers to find information quickly and easily as it is done geographically. The interface is unique and can display a large amount of rich media from within the one screen, without endless amounts of annoying page refreshes. The base design was completed in early 2007 and the first edition of the business plan completed by mid 2007.
After working through contacts he had met at Google, Mike was able to source an angel investor and gained seed capital funding for gunnago in late 2007. The site is weeks away from a beta testing phase and will be launched publicly in the latter half of 2008.
To quote Mike: -
I’m always interested in new ideas or thoughts in how to capitalize on the social and new media spaces and would welcome the chance to have a chat with people or companies willing explore the opportunities that this space is creating.

In his own words:
I recently moved to Sydney from the UK after 9 years in I.T. My first job was with EDSand after a brief spell supporting mainframes and writing Cobol I quickly moved into the client server team and from there into supporting Siebeland other CRM environments. I eventually left to try my hand at contracting and have been earning a living that way ever since, but I have always known that I am a closet entrepreneur. I joined the Open Coffee network on arriving in Sydney to help me realise this secret yearning and hopefully learn a thing or two from a few people who have spent some time in the trenches.
I recently started work on my own project, Riamo, with the aim of realising some of my web ideas. It’s still just a name and some vague concepts, but I hope to focus my efforts over the coming months to produce something tangible. Who knows, maybe someday I’ll have my very own ‘start up’…watch this space!
